MAORI FOUND GUILTY
RECOMMENDATION TO MERCY [FROM OUR OW7s' correspondent] HAMILTON, Monday The Hamilton Supreme Court was occupied throughout to-day in hen ring a charge of attempted rape preferred against Mate Maihana Kingi, a Maori farm hand, aged Hi. Mr. Justice Fair presided. Mr. H. T. Gillies appeared for the Crown and Mr. Strang was assigned as counsel for accused. The ofr'ence was alleged to hare occurred at a lonely dwelling at Papamoa in the early morning of March 22. The jury found accused guilty with a strong recommendation to mercy on account of the extenuating circumstances. His Honor observed for the guidance of juries in the future that they should weigh carefully the evidence on whiijh such recommendations were made. He had no doubt that the jury in tjie present case had done so. Sentence was deferred until Wednenday.
