NATIVE ART GALLERY

THE PORTRAIT SECTION A very fair start has been made with the building up of a portrait section of the National Art Gallery, Wellington. Five portraits were on exhibition the other day, on the occasion of the handing over of portraits of Sir Francis Bell and Sir Truby King. These were His Majesty the King, full length, Lord Bledisloe, full length in court regalia, Sir Francis Bell, Sir Truby King, and Sir James Mills. To be added to these are the fine portraits in oils of Lord Rutherford, Sir Harold Beauchamp, and Archbishop Redwood. There is an admirably executed fulllength portrait of Edward Jerningham Wakefield hanging in the Wellington City Council Chamber. This is a real gallery portrait, and as the subject had very little to do with municipal politics, it has been suggested that his portrait might be offered to the trustees of the National Gallery.
