SHIPMENTS TO AMERICA CLEAR MARKING REQUIRED [BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORTER] WELLINGTON, Monday The necessity for poods exported to the United States to be clearly and fully marked with the name of the country of origin was emphasised by tho Minister of Customs, Hon. W. Nash, in a statement issued to-night. "Complaints have been received recently from exporters of New Zealand produce to the United States to the effect that some shipments have been surcharged with additional duty owing to the fact that the words 'mado in New Zealand' did not appear on them," the Minister said. "Inquiries by the Government indicate that as a general rule goods imported into tho United States and containers of the goods must he marked with the name of the country of origin. It <s provided that if goods arc exported not so marked an extra duty of 10 per cent shall be imposed in addition to the cost of marking. "It is understood that tho name of tho country of origin must be shown in full, such contractions as tho letters N.Z. not being permissible. Tho matter is one which has been noted for consideration when negotiations take place between the Dominion and the United States with a view to concluding a trade treaty. "In the meantime exporters of goods to th<} United States are advised to give effect to the American regulations in order to save trouble and expense both to themselves and to the consignees of tlxeir produce."
