RAILWAY GROUNDS
ENCIRCLING WITH KOWHAIS OPENING NEW AREA The planting of kowhai trees, which will eventually form one of the most attractive features of the Auckland railway station grounds, is proceeding steadily, and the comprehensive scheme, which will result in the station being surrounded in spring Ly a mass of yellow blooms, is now taking definite shape. Trees have already been planted along the island footpath in front of the station, with two kauris as a centre-piece, and preparations are being made for more trees along the footpaths of the ramps leading to the main entrance. Visitors to Auckland proceeding from tho arrival platform to Ronayne Street and thence to Beach Road, will in future pass through an avenue of kowhnis, set amid smooth grassy borders, and a start has been made with this work. Kowhais have been chosen for the scheme not only because of their attractive appearance, but also because they have been proved to thrive particularly well at the station, in spite of the smoke and other handicaps. It will take about seven years for the small trees to bloom. Another improvement now being carried out is the construction of a flight of steps to give direct access from near the main entrance to the largo patch of grass in front of the station on tho Parnell side. Seats will be provided in the shade of ferns and other shrubs which have been planted there, and it will be a delightful spot for passengers who wish to spend then time outside whilo waiting for trains. It has been little used for this purpose hitherto, as it has been necessary to go to Beach Road to enter or leave tho area.
