NEED FOR DEFENCE
Sir, —One reads with much interest the letters appearing in your columns daily in connection with the burning question of national defence. Pacifists and idealists may preach national understanding, but the average citizen realises that as long as there are men on this earth there will be avarice, jealously and all the other dominating influences that invariably cause war. Notwithstanding the Rev. Clyde Carr's remarks in Parliament last week, this little country can be defended and it is up to the Government of New Zealand to take immediate steps to provide adequate defence, whether in conjunction with an Imperial scheme or separately. Failing this, tho public should endeavour to visualise a ruthless invasion and study the menace which daily grows nearer. Why not form defence associations in each district and endeavour to wake the public from the apathy that exists to-day in this regard. Safety First.
