LADIES' GOLF
ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFYING ROUNDS THE LEADING AGGREGATES By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright (Received May 17, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. May 16 The first qualifying round for the ladies' golf championship was played yesterday on the Southport course. There were 140 competitors. With a score of 75 (which equalled the scratch score for the course), Mrs. Goldthwaite (United States), led the field. The next in order were: —Miss Diana Fishwick, former British champion, and Hiss Corlet, finalist in the Hnglish championship, 7(3 each; Mrs. Walker, last year's Australian champion, Mrs. Vare, American champion, formerly M iss Glenning Collett, 77 each; Miss Wanda Morgan (holder), 78. Six other Americans were within seven strokes of the leador.
Mrs. Waddell (New Zealand) took 99 and "visited" almost every bunker, while her putts rimmed the holes. In the second qualifying round to-day Miss Bridgett Newell (Derbyshire), led the field with a women's record of 74 and an aggregate of 152. She was followed by Miss Wanda Morgan, 76; Mrs. Walker, 77; Miss Jessie Anderson, /7, making all their aggregates 154.
The nearest scores of other leaders included: —Mrs. Goldthwaite 81, aggregate, 156; Miss Fishwick, 81 and 157; Mrs. Vare, 80 and 157. Qualifiers needed 174 or better.
Mrs. Waddell did not return a card. Her score was approximately BS. She had ordered a new set of clubs, which were too light, however. Accordingly, she played with her husband's clubs, which were too heavy and too long. All the Americans qualified among the 64 who will take part in match play on Monday.
