CLASH WITH POLICE

Mny 16 The sporadic labour trouble along the waterfront in New York reached a climax to-day when 2000 pickets belonging to the maritime unions and sympathisers engaged in a clash with the police, which lasted an hour. Twenty-five of the pickets were injured, some of them seriously, and two policemen were injured. Several of the stikers were arrested.
For some time the loft wing union, which is said to bo affiliated to Harry Bridges' Ran Francisco organisation, has been striking against several steamship lines operating between tho east and the west roast. To-day tho picket line was formed in anticipation of tho sailing of the liner Virginia for San Francisco. According to tho polico tho pickets ignored a warning not to cross tho polico linos and whon they did so a fi;ght started. Mounted policemen repeatedly charged the pickets, swinging their batons freely. At least five women were among tho iirjured. In spite of tho disorder tho Virginia sailed according to schedule, although the strikers claimed that sho was undermanned.
