SIX GOALS TO HEMI

PONSONBY BEATS MANUKAU Ono of tho outstanding features of the match between Manukau nnd Ponsonby was the splendid goal-kicking of Hemi, the Manukau fullback, who kicked six goals during the afternoon. The game was evenly contested throughout and it was only in tho lust few minutes that Ponsonby gained tho ascendancy. Manukau's forwards, by their bustling tactics, completely upset tho Ponsonby rear division. Tho Ponsonby backs, however, wero often dangerous once tho ball came cleanly from the scrum. In tho first half the Manukau forwards completely dominated the game, but their tactics lacked finish. Play was ragged during that time, although an occasional dash by the Ponsonby backs brightened up the game.

Hemi opened the scoring for Manukau with a great penalty kick from the sideline and from further out lie just missed two more. The Ponsonby backs set of! as the result of clever play by Ililey and both Kay and W. Stockley gave excellent support. The passing was crisp and different in style from that of the Manukau backs, who resorted to solo efforts, which were not successful. On one occasion Davies made a fine run down the wing, but attempted to force his way past Paton when a pass to Mason would have resujted in a try for Manukau. Ponsonby led at half-time by eight points to five, although Manukau had a little the belter of the play. On resuming the Ponsonby backs handled well and better combination resulted. However, Hemi, with four successive penalty kicks, three from well out, placed Manukau equal and play became exciting. Five minutes before time the Ponsonby backs asserted their superiority and from beautiful openings made by Riley, two good tries were scored. Ponsonby was the better team on the day, but Manukau will be hard to beat when the forwards adopt a more open style of play. Riley was undoubtedly the best back on the ground and he was largely responsible for Ponsonby's success. His only fault was a tendency to hold on too long. Kay played well at centre and often started attacks from defensive positions. Holland, on the wing, showed a lot of speed and scored three nice tries. W. Stockley, five-eighths, and halfback, did useful work on dofence, especially the former. Morgan and Davis were outstanding among the Ponsonby vanguard and Blood was also prominent. Hemi played a fine game at fullback for Manukau. Mason was prominent at centre, cutting in nicely on occasions. Phillips played well behind the scrum, while Trevathan. at five-eighths, got through a lot of useful work. Watene and Gault were the best of the forwards. Pickering was not so prominent ns usual. Kawe did well although suffering from a leg injury early in the game. For Ponsonby trim were scored by Holland (3), Morgan. Halloran and J. Stockley. Paton converted three tries. For Manukau Mason and Pickering scored tries. Hemi converted one and kicked five penalty goals. Mr. S. Billman was referee. ,
