VALUELESS CHEQUES
SALESMAN SENTENCED THREE DAYS' IMPRISONMENT Pleading guilty to three charges of obtaining sums of £1 by means of valueless cheques, Hector Wilfred MacLonnan, aged 38, land salesman, appeared before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., in the Police Court on Saturday morning.
Senior-Detective Hall said that on March 1 accused booked a room in a city hotel, and the licensee cashed a cheque from him for £l, which was later returned from the bank, marked "refer to drawer." The accused later cashed two other valueless cheques. When interviewed by Detective Mahood he frankly admitted that he knew ho had no money in the bank. The accused had not been in trouble before, said the senior-detective, and at the time lie issued tho cheques he was drinking heavily. I:le was prepared to make full restitution. "1 was drinking very heavily and I was suffering badly from an attack of malaria fever," accused told the magistrate. "I am prepared to take out a prohibition order." Stating that it appeared to be a deliberate and successful method of defrauding people, the magistrate sentenced accused to three days' imprisonment on each of the charges, tho sentences to bo concurrent.
