FIFTY YEARS MARRIED MR. AND MRS. J. W. DWYER [BT TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday Mr. John Dwyer, former superintendent of police in Christchurcli, and Mrs. Dwyer this week celebrated their golden wedding, for it is iust fifty years since they were married at St. Joseph's Cathedral, Dunedin. It is 58 years since Mr. Dwyer arrived in New Zealand from Ireland, and his sojourn in the country has been full of interest. His adventures started on tho way out from his homeland, for ho was a passenger on the ill-fated City of Auckland. After spending a few months on a station in Hawke's Bay, Mr. Dwyer went in to Napier and there joined the Police Force, in which ho served with great distinction for 43 years. At tho time of his retirement on superannuation in 1921, ho was superintendent in Christchurch. Assisted by his wife, about whom ho cannot say. too much, Mr. Dwyer made a mark for himself wherever he was stationed and was frequently honoured by public presentations and farewells oil the occasions when ho was transferred. During his years in tho service Mr. Dwyer's Irish geniality, courtesy and tact made him one of the most popular police officers in the country, and a climax to a fine career was tho big farewell accorded him on his retirement from tho position of superintendent.
