CHARGE OF MURDER
CASE FOR THE DEFENCE ACCUSED GIVES EVIDENCE [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] DUNEDIN. Wednesday The trial of Hugh Urquhart Neil Gunn on a charge of murdering William Beattie at Waitepeka was continued in the Supreme Court to-day. The case for the Crown was concluded and the defence was opened, accused himself entering the box. Counsel for accused said that Gunn would say he was ignorant as to how the injury was caused, and that he did not consciously strike Beattie. He would say he picked up a stick to urge his horse through a gateway. It would bo stated that the horse reared and that deceased was thrown against a strain-ing-post. Accused was never on the same side of the horse as deceased, whose injuries might have been caused in a variety of ways.
Evidonce along these lines was given by accused, who will be cross-examined to-morrow morning.
