DEPLETION OF FISHERIES
INSPECTOR'S WARNING AUSTRALIAN COMPANY'S PLAN [BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION*] WELLINGTON, Wednesday Referring to the announced intention of a company in Australia to supply 300 tons of fish in Sydney and Melbourne each month from a base in Cook Strait, Mr. A. E. Hefford, chief inspector of fisheries, expressed doubt whether New Zealand waters could stand up to such a drain for more than a short time. Mr. HefFord stressed the danger of over-exploitation. There was 110 evidence, he said, of New Zealand waters abounding in fish in comparison with what was known of the productiveness of other fishing regions in the world.
