RIOTS IN AMERICA MILITANT SOCIALISTS Labour riots in the United State* were assuming serious proportions half a century ago. A New York cablegram in the New Zealand Herald of May 7. 1886, stated: — " Meetings of Socialists, totalling easily 15.000 men, were held yesterday in the city of Chicago. The police then fired upon the rioters, shooting 50 of them dead. The greatest consternation prevails in the city, business being to a large extent at a standstill." Another item in the same issue stated: — " The Victoria Arcade may N now be regarded as fairly opened to traffic and a large number of persons are availing themselves of this short cut to Fort Street, it is anticipated there will be no difficulty in shortly letting the whole of the shops in tne arcade.'
