THE LEAGUE CODE

CITY CLUB'S PROTEST ALLEGATION OF OVERTIME SOLE SELECTOR DESIRED Lengthy evidence was heard at. last night's meeting of the Auckland Rugby League in connection with a protest from the City Club against overtime alleged to have been played last Saturday in the game on No. 2 ground at Carlaw Park in the Citv-Marist match. The chairman, Mr. G. Grey Campbell, stated that the City Club claimed that four minutes' extra time was played. Mr. G. Hunt, president of the City Club, stated that the match on No. 1 ground was completed five minutes before tlio match on No. 2 ground, which was actually started before the game on No. 1. Mr. T. Hill, the official timekeeper, explained thnt accurate details hud been taken throughout the came. Actually the game was finished three minutes after tho winning try had been scored, but that period was occupied in the taking of the kick at goal. Mr. E. Asher said the protest was based on the fact that the game on No. 1 ground commenced five minutes after the game on No. 2. He added thnt Qie City (Jlub was concerned over a difference of four minutes played after the game on No. 1 ground had ended. The chairman ruled that from actual fact the timekeeper was solo judge of time, as had been understood for many years. After further evidence was taken in committee, Mr. Campbell stated that the protest was not sustained, and a refund of the protest fee was ordered. Mr. Campbell referred to the intention of tho New Zealand League in the matter of the non-replacement of players. Mr. R. Doble said at the conference held over tho week-end it was decided to recommend that all Leagues confirm rule 1 of the hand book, which provided that no players be replaced once the game lias commenced. The chairman added that in the past the rule had been bbserved in the breach, and until detinite instructions had been received from the New Zealand League dispensations as enjoyed in past years would be observed, and the referees could allow replacements as hitherto. On the motion of Mr. Campbell, who said he was directed by tho request of six of the senior clubs, it was decided to appoint a sole selector for the Auckland representative team, and nominations are to be called for by the next meeting, A request from the Glenora Club for a senior match to be played in the Glen Eden district was favourably recommended by the junior control board, and it was decided to defer consideration until later in the senson. The Referees' Association advised confirmation of the selection of Mr. L. Bull as a number of tho referees' appointment board. The following applications for registrations were approved:—E. A. Jones (Richmond). J. Greenwood (Richmond), K. Fletcher (Richmond), R. Farrington (Ponsonby), G. L. Breed (Marist), H. McCatty (City). It was reported that the transfer of G. Kerr, from Green Lane to Devonport, was not in order. Correspondence on the matter was read from the Green Lnne Club, and it was agreed that the transfer rules had been complied with. WITH NEPIA AT HOME MAORIS DRAW BIG CROWDS [by telegraph—own correspondent] GISBORNE. Wednesday In n recent letter George Nepia, the former All Black, says he is feeling well and under the League Code, which is not strenuous on a fullback, he should bo able to play football up to 40 years of age. At the same time he will be glad when the season is over for ho finds it hard playing two matches a week. "Although." continues Nepia, "our club, Streatham-Micham, is still yet. young and green its fixtures always draw, big crowds, owing probably to the inclusion of Maoris in the team." He mentions that although Holder did not start very well, he is now playing great football. In fact, he is regarded as a star. The greatest weakness in tho team, in the opinion of Nepia, is in thf> inside hacks. "I wish," he commented, "I had Horangi Harrison with us." He is very much impressed with the facilities provided for the comfort of players. Every ground provides a dressing room, shower and warm swimming pool. George Harrison, McDonald and Charlie Smith are living in a rented house with Mrs. Harrison as housekeeper, but Nepia himself stays nt a boarding house.
