RUGBY FOOTBALL

JUNIOR BOARD MATTERS UNION RECEIVES PROTEST COMING UNIVERSITY MATCH A protest from the emergency committee of the junior management board, against what it contended was unwarranted intervention in its affairs bv members of the Auckland Rugby Union management committee, was received by tlie latter body at its meeting last night. Tho protest arose out of the case of ft player who appeared before tlio junior emergency committee for re-grading. Tho committeemen asserted in a letter, supported by n covering letter from the junior management board, that certain members of the management committee who were in tho office at the time had given instructions in a case in which they hnd no jurisdiction. "We feel that the functions of the committee are its own concern." fhey 6aid. Mr. R- Galbraith said the letter forwarded by the Junior Management Board was fair, but only up to a point. It had ' overlooked tho fact that the emergency committee of the main management committee was also, fitting at tho time. '"ln the case of the re-grading of this particular player." he said, "we simply tried to bring tho broader view of the Question before their committee. "We were unaware that this season their emergency committee lias no re-grading powers, ns in the past. No specific instruction was given by us to regrade'tho player. We merely pointed out that in the past they had had that power and that it seemed unfair to deprive the player of a game. The implication that there was compulsion is incorrect." W. G. Laurie said he was sure the »enior management committee representatives would not dream of trying to undermine the influence of tho junior board or its committee. Mr. A. Tilly: They have been reading rule 9—that the junior management board shall control junior football. It was agreed that the members of the emergency committee of the junior board should be invited to meet the management committee so that explanations could be made and the misunderstanding cleared up. Late Application When an application was made by Mr. G. Nicholson for the admission of a Ponsonby fourth grade team to the fourth grade competition, which started last Saturday, Mr. A. Tilly, representing the junior management board, said it would be possible if there was a bye. but not other wise. Mr. Galbraith said they could not leave these boys without a game and Mr. A. A. Baker, the chairman, agreed that it would be a serious thing. Mr. Tilly, having examined the draw, said there were 12 teams already entered, and therefore there was no bye. "We can't smash the draw ud again." he said. The Chairman: I would view it with alarm if the junior management board refused to accept this entry. After further discussion it was decided that Mr. Nicholson should enter the team and an effort be made to include it if this could be done without unduly disturbing the draw. Mr. A. Murdoch inquired as to the condition of the racecourse ground at Green Lane, stating that on ft former occasion * team that played there had to hunt round for goalposts, erect the same and mark the ground. It was explained that the ground was now being shared with the League code, but that the posts used were the Rugby Union's property. Members felt that in the circumstances the Union should not have to assume sole responsibility for the preparation of the ground. The matter was referred to the grounds committee. Question of Insurance On the recommendation of the insurance tub-committee, it was agreed" that the insurance scheme be extended to cover players in the mid-week Combined Services competition. Mr. H. Foy explained on behalf of the committee that the teams would be on the same basis as clubs in the ordinary inter-club competition, and would not be covered for matches outside the official draw, while there would have to be a separate premium in the case of players engaged in both the inter-club and Com bined Services competitions. Permission for the Auckland University Club to play Victoria College, Wellington, at Eden Park on May 20, was granted, but it was decided that no financial assistance toward promoting the match could be given. When applications for reinstatement were before the meeting, a long discussion took place concerning the case of Colin Watts, an Eden player making an application for a second reinstatement. The chairman slated that it, was very seldom an application for a secons reinstatement was forwarded by the union, and then only when there were special circumstances. He felt that there v.ere special circumstances in the case of Watts, and this view was endorsed by other members of the committee. Other reinstatements approved were from W. V. Fredatovich, James Harris, E. F. McNeil, W. A. Absolurp and R. Dick. The New Zealand Union advised.that the following reinstatements had been approved: —V. F. Hammond, J. Holmes, H. D. Dickon, H. L. Davis, J. C. Carr, L. P. Cooney, N. Parris, D. Harris, R. S. Harris, S. H. Crook, F. D. Dick. W. J. Mirko, N. J. Sinclair, C. Smith, R. Peters, R. J. Kirkland, A. Allen. The chairman reported that the Manukau sub-union had agreed that a dispensation be to allow players of outstanding ability to play for city clubs, provided that, in the event of their not being •elected for senior A teams, they returned to the /Manukau sub-union. Under this agreement the transfers were approved of C. Hoss and W. Lilburne to Otahuhu, and R. Dow to Ponsonby. It was agreed that, to assist the game in the Manukau sub-union, an effort should be made to plar two or more senior' games at Papakura this season. Wednesday The Rugby Union management committee which met last evening approved the affiliation of the Coromandel Sub-Union with Thames. The Old Boys' Club notified that applications for transfers to the newly-formed Ramblers Club had been received from eight players. The club stated that it agreed to the transfers provided the players concerned made themselves financial. The letter pointed out that the transfers of i these players had, in addition to weakening | the' junior team, seriously affected the field- , ing of a third grade team. It was stated ; that the new club would comprise players from all the junior clubs with the exception of High School. On the motion of Messrs. Pratt and Tonge the secretary was instructed to write to the Auckland Rugby Union on the question of teams playing short-handed and of the power of a referee being able to award a match to the opposing side under such circumstances. 1 The management committee of the Hauraki Plains Rugby Union met last evening, Mr. E. A. Ma honey presiding over a full attendance. The chairman reported on last Saturday evening's meeting of the Thames Valley Rugby Union, stating that ii conference of representatives from the Plains and Paeroa Unions was to meet on Thursday to define a boundary between the two unions. An application for the transfer of two players from the Turua Club to Netherton wag deferred pending definition of this boundary. Mr. York, of Wnitakaruru, was appointed sole selector of the senior representatives and Mr. French, of Kopuarahi the junior representative selector. Four senior clubs, six junior and three third grade clubs entered the competitions. SOUTH AUCKLAND REFEREES APPEAL FOR GREATER INTEREST [from our own correspondent] PUKEKOHE. Wednesday The statement that he could not truthfully say the past season hud been a successful one was made by the president of the South Auckland Rugby Referees' Association, Mr. H. Pleydell, at the annual meeting of the association at Pukekohe last night. This was due. mainly to the lack of support from sub-associations, exclusive of Pukekohe. The flame of enthusiasm, which made such progress in 1934, had become very dim. with the result that the association was more or less stagnant. Unless sub-associations were prepared to give more enthusiastic support it seemed probj a'ole that the South Auckland association would become defunct. As he considered this would be a great pity be appealed for a revival of interest. Delegates were present at the meeting from the Pukekohe, Waikare and Waiuku associations. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £3 7b with a loss of £2 5s on the year's workings. The election of officers resulted;— President, the Rev. H. H. Jeffreys; vice-presi-dent, Mr G. Mather: secretary, Mr. R. Branch; executive committee, Messrß. L. K. Brown, P. T. Paterson and C. J. Whitmore; appointment board. Messrs. H. Pleydell, F. H. Hewitt and a representative appointed by the South Auckland Rugby Union; delegate to the South Auckland Union, Mr. Jeffreys. The affiliation fee was fixed at 10s o sub-association. Mr. Jeffreys intimated to the Waikare delegates that he would be prepared to visit Rangiriri to give any assistance he could to the referees in that area. The tentative date for the visit was fixed for May 15. FRANKLIN SCHOOLS' UNION [from our own correspondent] TUAKAU, Wednesday The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Franklin Primary Schools' Rugby Union held at Harrisville:— Patron, Mr. W. NORTHERN WAIROA UNION [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] DARGAVILLE, Wednesday The management committee of the Northern Wairoa Rugby Union, at its meeting last evening, decided to play fixtures scheduled for last Saturday in all grades on Saturday next The Northern Wairoa Referees Association wrote recommending that playing areas should be wired off to prevent encroachment by spectators, and asked for the assistance of the union. Mr. J. Parore, the referees' delegate, said two good referees had been lost owing to spectators interfering. It was decided to approach clubs asking them to help referees by appointing officials to keep the lines clear, and where possible to erect,'wire to stop encroachment. The Old Boys* Club (Whangarei) wrote asking for a match with any local senior team drawing a bye and it was decided to reply that a team was not available. It was decided to write to Whangarei again advising that May 30 would be the most suitable date for the visit of the Whangarei representatives to Dargaville, with June <5 as an alternative date. The Bay of Islands and Ofamatea Unions are also to be asked for dales suitable for matches in Dargaville.

MANGONUI COUNTY SCHOOLS [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] KAITAIA, Wednesday The following officers were elected at tho annual mfeting of the Mangonui County Primary Schools Rugby Football Association; —President, Mr. A. 11. Wood (Kaitaia) : secretary and treasurer, Mr. D. Barry (Kaitaia); delegate to Mangonui County Union, Mr. D. Barry; committee, Messrs. F. Braik (Ahipara), R. Shutt (Paparoat and T. The final will be played between the winners of each division. The season will commence on June R.
