CHARGES OF ASSAULT
RELEASE ON CONDITIONS Having pleaded guilty to seven charges of indecent assault on girls. Robert Thomas Williamson, aged 62 (Mr. Singer), appeared on remand before Mr. Justice Fair for sentence in the Supreme Court yesterday. Mr. Singer said he had seen a medical certificate regarding prisoner, and asked that he be released on terms. His Honor said the medical certificate showed that a sentence of imprisonment would probnbly be followed by the most serious consequences for the prisoner. Consequently, he did not propose to impose a term of imprisonment, but to direct that he be released on probation. The special conditions were that he should live in such locality as the probation officer should direct, preferably in Gisborne; that he should not leave home unless accompanied b.v an adult approved by the probation officer, and that he be absent from home only at such times as the probation officer should approve. These conditions, His Honor thought, would result in little children being protected from injury. He would be released on probation for three years on the first charge and convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called on on the other charges.
