Y.W.C.A. APPEAL

MORE MONEY NEEDED HELP FOR YOUNG WOMEN FINE WORK PERFORMED "Invest in youth for the citizenship of the future," is the slogan that has been chosen by the Auckland Young AVomen's Christian Association for its campaign to raise £ISOO to complete the sum of £SOOO, for which an appeal was made last year for the maintenance and extension of the association's work. Generous as were contributions last year, it is hoped that the responso to the present appeal will be even more encouraging and will enable the association to reach its objective. To enable work to be continued money is immediately required. During the depression, the maintenance of the association taxed its resources to the utmost. Revenue was reduced and subscriptions curtailed, while responsibilities created by widespread distress and unemployment had to be met. Tho result was that the association found itself compelled to work upon a bank overdraft for current expenditure, as well as to allow interest payments to stand over. For half-a-century the Y.W.C.A. has been a centre for the girlhood of Auckland. For many thousands of girls and women its hostel has provided a home and its clubs have supplied Christian fellowship in work, study, play and prayer. Its inquiry office and community lounge have provided a friendly welcome, advice and information, and its cafeteria well-cooked meals at a reasonable price. The gymnasium and the health school are other important features. Further, the association's holiday house has provided a happy camp holiday, while the travellers' aid department has given travel facilities. Upon this basis the Y.W.C.A. has built up a fine tradition of service to the girlhood and womanhood of Auckland. It aims at bringing the best that life has to offer to girlhood. An effort is made to assist a girl to join with others in finding the best way of life, to become the best kind of woman she can, to help make her home, her city and her country the best that good womanhood and good citizenship can make them. In this manner the association is performing a service to the community. But to enable this work to bo continued and extended it requires help.
