DOMINION FISHING

DEEP-SEA SPOBT "THE BEST IN THE WORLD" AMERICAN ANGLER'S VIEW TROUT WATERS AT TAUPO "This is the greatest fishing country in the world; there is no doubt about it," said Dr. G. B. Pierce, of New York, in an-interview yesterday. Dr. Pierce, who is an enthusiastic and most successful angler, is visiting New Zealand for the fifth year in succession and he proposes to return next summer. Since his arrival in the Dominion early in February he has fished extensively at Taupo and in North Auckland waters and he is spending a few days in Auckland before leaving for Wellington, where he will join the Makura next Tuesday on his return to the United States. Dr. Pierce said yesterday that in spite of claims made regarding the merits of American and Australian fishing, ho was firmly of the opinion that no country could ofler fishermen greater sport than did New Zealand. Ho had fished in various parts of the world and had found the big-game fishing of the Dominion to be definitely superior to that obtained elsewhere. In North Auckland waters this season, said Dr. Pierce, ho had caught 26 swordfish off the reel, including four black marlin, the largest of which weighed "OSlb. Last season his total was 20. The sport this year was excellent, but very few mako sharks were seen. Usually they wero fairly plentiful. Referring to the trout fishing at Taupo, Dr. Pierce said the season had proved very difficult, largely owing to unfavourable weather, and it was surprising that anglers obtained any fish at all. Ho was more successful than most, however, and secured a total of 30 fish in 10 days. Dr. Pierce proposes to visit England and France within'the next few months, but he says he will make a point of being in the United States when the presidential elections are held toward the end of the year. Later he will return to New Zealand for next season's fishing.

CATCHES AT ROTORUA SOME FINE TROUT LANDED [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] ROTORUA, Wednesday As is usual toward the end of the season, anglers are catching a larger typo of fish in the Rotorua Lakes district. Weather conditions, however, have been against fly fishermen, but trolling parties have had good sport. Lako Tarawera has fished well, with a substantial increase in the average weight of the fish caught. Mrs. G. B. White, fishing in Ltke Okataina, landed two of the best fish caught in this district for some considerable time. They weighed 13Ub and 1241b and both were in good condition. Another fine trout of 131b was caught in Ruato Bav, Lake ltotoiti. bv Mr. B. Gleeson, of Rotorua, and Mr. A. Carruthers, of Rotorua, also caught two of 12§lb and 111b respectively, in the same vicinity.
