CITY COUNCIL SEAT
PENDING BY-ELECTION So far no nominations have been received for the seat on the Auckland City Council rendered vacant by thp death of Mr. J. W. Yarnall. The byelection is set down for May 27, and nominations close at noon on May 15. A meeting of the Labour Representation Committee will be held next Monday evening to choose a candidate to contest the seat. Inquiry has been received as to the statutory qualifications necessary for enrolment as an elector for the purpose of voting in this by-election and for candidacy for the vacant seat. In order to exercise a vote a person must be a ratepayer or owner of the freehold of his property, or he can vote on his residential qualification provided that he has lived within the city boundaries for the last three months and has been in New Zealand not less than 12 months. Further, he must be on the roll. To qualify as a candidate a person must be an elector, but will not be eligible if he is an alien, a person oi unsound mind, a bankrupt who has not obtained an order of discharge, or if he is a person convicted of any offence punishable by imprisonment unless he has received a free pardon or suffered the penalty imposed upon him.
