DEVONPORT LOANS

RATEPAYERS' INTEREST WORK TO BE COMMENCED "The results of the recent loan proposals," said the Mayor of Devon port, Mr. H. F. W. Meikle, last night at the meeting of the Borough Council, "show that . the ratepayers of the borough are taking a keen interest in its affairs. In spite of the wet weather on the polling day over 31 per cent of the ratepayers voted on the question. If the day had been fine there is little doubt that the percentage w,ould have been at least 40." Mr. G. D. Hardy: And all four proposals probably would have been defeated ! "There is little observation I can make," continued the Mayor, "on the actual results of the poll. The wishes of the ratepayers have been clearly d*l- - and the authorised wcir.ks will tjf put. in hand immediately." A rumour that the council intended to build a cabaret at Cheltenham was one of the principal reasons, said Mr. S. S. Green, that the Cheltenham kiosk proposal was so decisively defeated. GLEN EDEN PROPOSAL MEETING OF RATEPAYERS Ratepayers and residents of Glen Eden have been invited to attend a public meeting to be held to-night to discuss the result of the recent poll on a proposal to raise a loan of £3500 to build a town hall After the poll last month it was announced that 110 votes had been recorded for the proposal and the same number against, but after a recount it was stated that one of the votes against the proposal had been found to bo invalid. Ths scheme had, therefore, been approved by 110 votes to 109.
