SOCIAL WORKER

COMFORTS CLUB PRESIDENT A sum of over £-14 was realised as the result ot the masquerade ball held in the Whangarei Town Hall last week in aid of tho Comforts Club fund. This will go toward the fund for providing a new ward at the Whangarei District Hospital. Opportunity was taken to bid farewell to Mrs. A. D. Jack, who for several years has been president of the Comforts Club, prior to her leaving for Mount Eden, where her husband has been appointed town clerk. In tracing tho history and achievements of the club, the Mayor, Mr. W. Jones, said that with the funds raised, one of the end verandahs at the women's ward of the Whangarei Hospital had been built in and entirely furnished, and the sitting room in the men's medical ward had also been well furnished. Tho cllub had also installed seven wireless se'is in the hospital. In addition it had presented a perambulator to the children's ward, and it had donated 2000 books to the hospital last year. The club had also been particularly good to the children and old men at Christmas time. Other work included the sending of two unfortunate ladies on a month's holiday and defraying all their expenses. In presenting Mrs. Jack with a hand - some bedroom clock and complete -set, the Mayor said she had worked splendidly and with wonderful results for the alleviation of distress. Her place as a social worker would be difficult to fill. Another tribute to Mrs. Jack was paid by the parishioners of Christ Church, Whangarei, when she was presented with a black enamel and chromium dressing table set. The vicar, the Rev. H. T. Steele, spoke of her valued services to the community. Further expressions of appreciation were made by Mrs. Bispham, who presented her with a bouquet, and Mr. F. Higginson, a member of the Whangarei Hospital Board.
