ROAD TO ROTORUA
[COMPLAINTS OF MOTORISTS // REPORTS TO ASSOCIATION Complaints concerning the rough state of the main road between Cambridge and the Rotorua side of Tirau were received at the rate of several an hour yesterday by the Automobile Association (Auckland). The majority of the drivers who took their complaints to the association were owners of heavy, late-model cars, which are renowned for their comfortable riding, yet the motorists were unanimous in their reports of discomfort and inconvenience. Although the motor-touring season is now over, there has been little decrease since Easter in the amount of traffic using the main road to Rotorua. Complaints concerning the potholes, corrugations and generally dangerous condition of the surface have been received for the most part not from holiday motorists but from many of the regular travellers who are consistent •users of the route. They report that many big holes have appeared in the Burface sinco Easter, and that the usual minor corrugations have increased in an unexampled manner. Big car owners who travelled over the road yesterday expressed surprise that smaller models had been able to complete the f journey without being structurally damaged The section of road that is the subject of so many complaints is described in the association's map-routes as being suitable for "average touring speeds." Since Easter, however, travellers have found it impossible to drive in comfort at anything like a reasonable touring pace. Motorists who wish to avoid the greatest inconvenience and possible damage to their cars have literally to pick their way, but there are so many holes in the road that it is impossible to avoid them all. and even the most careful drivers suffer discomfort.
