MAORI RELIEF WORKERS

SITUATION AT WHANGAPE INVESTIGATION PROMISED [by TELEGRAPH —OWN correspondent] KAITAIA, Wednesday The Mangonui County Council, the employing authority in this district, has supported the action of the certifying officer and the unemployment committee in connection with the standingdown of natives on relief works who were fined by the Whangape Maori Council for drunkenness and misbehaviour. The council has telegraphed to the Prime Minister, Mr. Savage, stating that until the matter is fully investigated all men on relief works in the Whangape area are to be stood down. The action of the council has also been supported by a telegram from the Kaitaia Chamber of Commerce to the Prime Minister. Replies have now been received from Mr. Savage stating that the matter will be fully investigated.
