INSTITUTE AFFAIRS

Te Aroha. —Mrs. Farmer presided over a good attendance at the April meeting of the Women's Institute. The annual points prize for 1935 was presented to Mrs. Hurliman by Mrs. Allen. The gardening committee will continue in office, supplemented by Mesdames Kennedy, Laurie and Frith. Mrs. F. Hughes, of Wardville, demonstrated the making of sugar-bag mats, felt hats and slippers. The afternoon's competition, a visual test, was won by Mrs. Hurliman. Mrs. Farmer was appointed delegate to the Dominion Federation meeting, to be held in Dunedin next July. Paparoa.—The fifth birthday of the institute was celebrated recently in the Garrison Hall, Mrs. Connie Jenkins presiding. Musical numbers were contributed by Mrs. H. M. Reid, Mrs. E. A. Fenwick iyid institute members. Competitions were won by Mrs. Borham, Mrs. Stratford and Mrs. Reid. Afternoon tea was served, a feature being the birthday cake, made and decorated by Mrs. T. Pendray. The institute members were thanked for their hospitality by visiting institute guests. Opotiki.—The annual social afternoon arranged by members of the Opotiki institute was held recently. Mrs. J. D. Fisher (president), presided over an attendance of about 150, a large number of whom had resided in the district for 50 years or more. Mrs. Fisher welcomed the gathering. The Mayor, Mr. G. S. Moody, congratulated the members on the organisation of the function, and spoke in eulogistic terms of the work of the institutes. A good programme of musical and elocutionary items entertained tho visitors. During the afternoon Mr. G. Armstrong suggested that the function offered a splendid opportunity to form a Pioneer Historical Society. The idea met with approval, and a committee comprising Mrs. Debreceny, Mrs. Downey, Mrs. J. Butler, the Mayor, Mr. Robert Irwin, and Mr. G. Armstrong was appointed, with Mr. Irwin as secretary. Swanson. —Tho first meeting of -the year of the institute was held recently. There was a full attendance of members and Mrs. W. Taylor was elected secretary. A talk on elocution was given by Mrs. Tate. There was a good entry for the competition, " A Child's Garment from an Adult's." Mrs. Park and Mrs. Cooke gained 10 points each. An enjoyable farewell social afternoon was given during the month to Mrs. Nankiville, who is leaving £he district. She was presented with a cane dinner waggon and tray. Miss Mitchell supplied the music for tho games. Manawatu.—At the April meeting Mrs. Macpherson presided. Mrs. Stowers was chosen delegate to the annual conference. The competition for the best child's winter frock was wpn by Mrs. Olancey. These frocks, together with the results of a clothes drive, were sent to the welfare officer in Auckland. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Blake and Seabourne. Naike. —At the monthly meeting the competition, a "six months' programme," was won by Mr. Griffin, and an interesting demonstration was given by Mr. Frangos on making woollen rugs. The roll call "Tongue Twisters" caused much merriment. Hostesses were Miss Zohs nnd Miss J. Blomfield. Glen Eden.—A meeting of the institute was presided over by Mrs. Hill. An interesting travel talk was given by Mrs. Chadwick. The competition, four scones or four pikelets, resulted:— Scones: Mrs. Kirkbride, 5 points; Mrs. Yates, 3; Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Elshaw, 1 point each. Pikeletß: Mrs. Elshaw, 5 points; Mrs. Robinson, 3; Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Robinson, 1 each. Flowers, best arranged: Mrs. Yates. 5 points; Mrs. Hill, 3; Mrs. Elshaw, Mrs. Robinson, Mrs, Brassington and Miss Brassington, 1. Hostesses were: Mesdames Kirkbride. Brown and Roberts.

To Kowhai.—After the roport nnd balance-sheet were adopted at n recent meeting the following officers were elected: —President, Mrs. Porter; vice-presidents, Mesdames Cox and Gibbcson; secretary, Mrs. Mcßridge. treasurer, Mrs Adams; committee, Mesdames Gifford, Jesty, Johnston, Taylor and F. Weathcrley. Tho roll coll was the most useful thing in the kitchen. Competitions were for a Swiss roll and the most effective tumbler of flowers All who rendered special service during the year were thanked by the retiring president. Piano solos by Misses McLachlan and Jesty were rendered.

Te Uku. —There was a large attendance at the annual meeting held in the Memorial Hall. An interesting talk on "Java" was given by Mrs. Robinson. The competition, a bowl of asters, was won by Miss Jean Mead. The election of officers was as follows: —President, Mrs. Moore; secretary, Mrs. J. H. Dent; treasurer. Miss C. Death; committee, Mesdames Moon, J H. Dent, Checkly, Dodd. Featherstonhaugh, Cogswell, F. Peart, R. Johnston and Miss Lofroth.
