CONSUL IN LONDON
NAZI LEADER REBUFFED DESIRED POST WITHHELD (Received April 27, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, April 27 The Daily Herald states that Dr. Otto Bene, Nazi " State group leader" for Britain and Ireland since 1933, who had aspired to become German ConsulGeneral in London, has been frustrated. The Foreign Office informed Berlin before his application for a Consul's " exequatur " (official recognition) that it would be refused. The Consul-Generalship, which is vacant, would have enabled Dr. Bene to interfere officially in matters concerning refugees, and have given him diplomatic immunity under which he could carry on Nazi activities.
