McARTHUR CASE

KETIJRN OF ACCUSED REMAND MADE ON BAIL FALSE PROSPECTUS CHARGE DETECTIVE'S LONG ABSENCE [by telegraph—press association] WELLINGTON. Monday Extradited from Australia, J. W. 8. McArthur arrived at Wellington to-day on the Monowai in the custody of Detective F. N. Robinson. He appeared before Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court and was remanded until May 27, bail, being allowed. On arrival at Wellington the aocused was met bv a party of detectives and taken straight .from the ship to the Magistrate's Court. The case was called within half an hour of the steamer's arrival. Mr. P. S. K. Macassey, Crown Prosecutor, appeared for the police, with him being Mr. C. Evans-Scott. Mr. W. L. Wiseman appeared for McArthur. Dr F. Louatt, McArthur's Sydney solicitor, accompanied him from Sydney, Having no legal standing in a New Zealand Court, he was present in an advisory capacity. The charges against McArthur were four: — That on April 8, 1933, being a director of a company called the Investment Executive Trust of New Zealand, Limited, he published a false prospectus inviting the public to subscribe to a second series of debentures. That on March 16, 1933, he published a false report to the debenture-holders of the company. That on March 20, 1934, he published another false report to the debenture-holders. That on April 3, 1934, he published another false prospectus of tho same company inviting the public to subscribe to a second series of debentures. Mr. Macassey asked for a remand until May 27, to which McArthur's counsel agreed. Bail was fixed at £IOOO in his own bond and two sureties each of £SOO, with a condition that McArthur report twice weekly to the police on Wednesdays and Saturdays at Wellington or Auckland. Detective Robinson's long task ended with the arrival of the Monowai. He had been in Australia for about seven months waiting until McArthur exhausted his rights of appeal.
