OBITUARY

MR. A. W. PRANGLEY The death occurred recently of Mr. A. W. Pranglev, aged 70, of Mangere, a well-known personality in shipping and racing circles in Auckland. Born at Southampton, England, Mr. Pranglev went to sea at an early age and sailed in several of the old-time clippers trading to China and the East. After making several voyages to New Zealand in similar types of vessels Mr. Pranglev finally settled in the colony in 1885. He became associated with the Wellington Steam Packet Company and sailed as chief steward in the Stormbird, running between Wanganui and Wellington. About 40 years ago he joined the Northern Steamship Company and was chief steward of many vessels out of Auckland, Onehunga and New Plymouth. After completing 24 years' service in the Rarawa Mr. Prangley retired and settled oh his farm at Mangere. Keenly interested in racing, Mr. Prangley bred and reared several prominent racehorses and is probably best remembered as the owner of Pegaway, which won many races, and was a great favourite with the racing public. He also bred and reared Soult May, which after being sold was taken to India and raced under the name of Devon and avoii the Viceroy's Cup. Mr. Prangley is survived by his wifq and three sons. MR. ROBERT McEWAN [from our own correspondent] HUNTLY; Monday The death has occurred of a wellknown resident of Huntly, Mr. Robert McEwan, aged 77. Born in Ayrshire, Scotland, Mr. McEwan came to New Zealand 51 years ago. Three years later he went to Australia, -where he was engaged in business and also took an active part in public life. Ho returned tQ New Zealand about 40 years ago and settled in the Coromandel district. Seven years later he went to Hikurangi to manage the Phoenix Coal Mine. He was later a mine manager at Huntly and Puponga, and he opened up the mine at Glen Afton. For many years lie was engaged in farming in the Pukekapia district, about fo ( ur miles west of Huntly, until four years ago, when ho retired and crime to live in Huntly. He is survived by his wife, one son and three daughters. MR. C. A. MARQUIS [by telegraph —press association] NAPIER, Monday The death has occurred of Air. Caesar Augustus Marquis, aged GO, field manager in tho Wellington district for the T. and G. Mutual Life Society. He took ill while visiting Napier at the beginning of last week and was operated on for acute appendicitis. MR. ROBERT R. PRINQLE I [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WHANGAREI, Monday I. The deat!i occurred yesterday at Maungatapero ol' Air. Robert Robson Pringle, nged 42 years, manager of the Maungatapero Dairy Company, Limited. Deceased was born at vVintou and gained experience of the various degirtments in dairy factories in tho ing Country. Some years ago ho was appointed manager of the Maungatapero Company, and during his management the annual output increased from 500 to 1100 tons. Ho was largely responsible for tho formation of the Maungatapero Cricket Club. Ho is survived by a widow, one son and two daughters. MRS. RACHEL SHEPHERD [by telegraph—ottn correspondent] PAPAROA, Monday The death has occurred at Matakohe of Mrs. Rachel Ann Shepherd, wife of the late Mr. George Shephord. at the age of 85 years. She came to New Zealand with her parents, tho late Mr. and Mrs. A. Jervis, among the Albertland settlers, in the ship Hanover in 18G2, and shared with them the hardships of early settlement. Mrs. Shepherd, who was a keen member of the Anglican Church, was married in 1870 to Sir. Shepherd, who diod in 1916. She is survived by four sons and three daughters. There are 25 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
