PUBLIC WORKS

AGREEMENT WITH MEN BASIC WAGE STANDARD 16/- A DAY SUGGESTED [BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORTER] WELLINGTON. Monday It is oxpoctod that tho terms of tibe agreement which has been drawn up between tho Public Works Department and the men on public works will be announced in the Houso of Representatives to-morrow by tho Minister of Public Works, Hon. R. Semple. One of tho most important provisions in tho agreement will bo that fixing tho basic wage to be paid on public works. Although no official announcement has been made, it is likely that tho figure decided on for general labourers will be in the vicinity of 16s a day. This, of course, will be merely a minimum wage, and will not prevent men working on contract from earning higher wages. A • wider significance is given to tho agreement by the fact that the minimum wage paid on public works will be taken as a standard when basic wages are being fixed in other industries, and that tho agreement will be a basis also for hours to be worked by men on relief.
