GERMAN DIPLOMAT FOUND
MISSING IN LIBYAN DESERT ROYAL AIR FORCE RESCUE CAIRO, April 23 After a five days' search by aeroplanes and cars, Baron von Stohrer, Gorman Minister at Cairo, was found hungry and thirsty by the crew of a Royal Air Force aeroplane, piloted by Squadron-Leader Storrar, 30 miles from Baharia, in the Libyan Desert. The Baron and his mechanic, seeing the aeroplane, wrenched off the driving mirror from their broken-down motorcar and used it as a heliograph. Flying-Officer Richardson noticed the flashes, and the Baron, who greeted his rescuer with diplomatic courtesy, said that his steering gear had broken during a blinding sandstorm. He had signalled vainly by means of clothes soaked in petrol and set on fire. The men's food was rationed, and their last mouthful, which had been eaten hours before the rescue, consisted of sardines, which aggravated their thirst. They had to drink rusty water from the radiator.
