♦ REPAIRING FLOOD DAMAGE QUESTION OF BASIC WAGE [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] PAPAROA, Sunday The Main Highways Board advised the Otamatea County Council at its last meeting that it would subsidise the cost of repairing flood damage except bridge renewals on the ordinary basis. The clerk reported correspondence with the Counties' Association and Employers' Association regarding the proposed amendment to the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act concerning wage fixation. He had advised that the council was opposed to fixation, as the wage standard might be placed 'high and there would be no opportunity of employing deserving men of less physical capability at a lower wage. 1 The council resolved to undertake maintenance of the Taipuha-W aipil Road provided it is left by the Public Works Department in satisfactory order. Mr. T. Dodds drew attention to the inferior metal which had been placed on Hills Road, Maereretu, by the Public Works Department, and it was resolved to write to the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R.
