DOMINION COMPOSERS

.COMPETITION ARRANGED • PRIME MINISTER'S ADVICE Advice that Broadcasting Board had arranged a competition for the encouragement of New Zealand-born composers, has been received from the Prime Minister, Sir. Savage, by Miss L. A. Hobbs, of Auckland, honorary secretary of the Composers and Lyrists' Club. Miss Hobbs communicated with the Prime Minister last month, suggesting -that the board should hold a contest, and assist in fostering the work of New Zealand composers! and lyrists. In his reply, the Prime Minister stated/that prizes of £25, £ls and £lO would be/awarded, and the competition would be judged by an eminent oyergeas musician'. One of the conditions '* would be that the board would have the broadcasting rights of the winning compositions for nine months, after which the prize-winners would havo the full publishing rights. " assured by the Broadcasting Board that purchases and broadcasts of many New Zealand compositions have already been made, and that the board is willing at all times to consider any manuscripts which composers care to submit," Mr. Savage said. " It is suggested, therefore, that your club should submit members' ■compositions to the board, when satisfactory arrangements could, I feel sure, be made for the broadcasting of any compositions up to the required standard. In this connection, there would be no desire on the part of the board to secure the publishing rights, which could be retained by the composers."
