BEER SOLD ILLEGALLY
CONSTABLE'S PURCHASE BOARDING HOUSE VISITED On three charges selling liquor without a licence, Elaine Gordon Beart appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court on Friday. Defendant pleaded not guilty. In outlining the case, Sub-Inspector D. Scott said that a plain clothes constable called at defendant's boarding house in Pitt Street, and obtained four bottles of beer at Is a bottle. On two other occasions the constable called at tho house and secured liquor. On February 22 a search was made of defendant's house, and 65 bottles of beer were found in the bedroom of a Chinese cook. In the pantry were four dozen empty bottles. Mr. Sullivan, appearing for defendant, s/ud that the constable when calling at the house was most persistent in his request for drink, and went as far as asking defendant if she would go to a hotel near by and secure some for him. However, in order to oblige, she obtained some beer for him from the Chinese cook. She was a respectable woman and kept a good boarding house, with some 35 guests. As a result of the transaction she did not receive any money. The cook kept the beer in his room for the purpose of entertaining his friends. Defendant. was convicted and fined £lO, with 10s costs.
