FLYING CONTEST
HERALD SCHOLAESHIPS SECOND SIX FINALISTS MASON TROPHY WINNER Six finalists for the second aviation scholarship offered by the proprietors of the New Zealand Herald were selected from a large entry at Mangere aerodrome yesterday by Flight-Lieuten-ant 1). M. Allan, chief instructor to tho Auckland Aero Club. They are Messrs. T. E. Clark, L. M. Grieves, M. C. Kinder, W. R. McComb, V. S. Curd and Miss Pickwick. These finalists will later undergo further tests with Mr. Allan before the winner is declared.
The weather was good for flying and the general standard of the competitors was excellent. The contestants were given ground instruction and then flew with Mr. Allan, being then given further instruction in tho control of the machine. Some of tho contestants were examined last week-end, but others, who were residents of country districts, then found difficulty in attending. The winner when selected will be given free tuition until he or she has passed for an A licence and will also become a pilot member of tho club for a year. The other five finalists will bo granted associate memberships for tho same period. The club is also prepared to train them and other competitors whose ability was noted by Mr. Allan for an inclusive fee of £.'35 each.
A competition was also held at Mangere yesterday for the Mason Trophy. There were nine entrants and the winner was Mr. P. C. Lewis.
The competition is a half-yearly one. It comprises taking off from Mangere and flying to the aerodrome at Hobsonville. After landing there the competitor is required to fly back and land at Mangere. Points are given for taking off, approach, landing and genoral flying. Two machines were employed yesterday and the contest extended throughout most of the morn-' ing and afternoon. FOSTERING IN WAIKATO SPORTS COMMITTEE FORMED [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Sunday At a meeting of pilots and pupils of the Waikato branch of the Auckland Aero Club it was decided to form a Sports and Competitions Committee to organise flying competitions among the local pilots. It is considered that this committee will fulfil a long-felt need in providing an opportunity for members of the A\ aikato branch to gain practice for inter-club fixtures and generally to promote more accurate flying. The following five pilots were elected a committee: —Dr. Mary Douglas, Dr. M. M. Hockin, Messrs. R. Charlton, N. Brown and W. Horton.
