RETALIATION THREATENED RESTRICTION BY AUSTRALIA LONDON. April 22 The Daily Telegraph's Tokio correspondent says Japan's attitude toward Australia is stiffening daily. Australia is to bo warned of the serious consequences which are likely if she raises barriers against Japanese goods. Mr. Matsushima, the new director of the Foreign Office trade bureau, told the Trade Promotion Association that Japan would vigorously retaliate against any country which unfairly restricted iriiports from Japan.
TREATY NEGOTIATIONS BREAKDOWN POSSIBLE (Received April 23, 9.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 23 The Canberra correspondent of the Sun states that grave doubts are now held by the Government that the trade negotiations for a treaty with Japan will reach a satisfactory conclusion. The Cabinet is discussing the position. The Prime Minister, Mr. J. A. Lyons, beyond saying that the negotiations had reached a very delicate stage, declined to comment. Sir George Pearce, Loader of the Government in the Senate, informed the House that the Government would make an early announcement as to its policy regarding Japanese trade, including rayon importations, and the whole question would bo debated in Parliament.
