RICCARTON TRACK

SCHOOLING OF JUMPERS FRACAS NOT TO RACE AGAIN FOUR STONYHURST FILLIES [by telegraph OWN correspondent] CHRISTCnURCH. Thursday There was some interesting schooling at Riccarton yesterday. Rasouli (R. Beale) and Monastic (A. Stove) were companions over five steeplechase fences, keeping together throughout. This was the first experience of the former over a sod wall, and, although he was careful, he negotiated it well and jumped the brush fences in a bold manner. Monastic gave a very pleasing display. Ho was well handled by his young rider, who was making his first attempt over country. Courtyard (W. Rainbow) jumped two pony hurdles twice at a fast pace and without a mistake, and then accompanied Arctic Star (Bsale) over two of the bigger hurdles, again shaping remarkably well for a beginner. On his few displays to date ho should develop into a dashing hurdler. Arctic Star continued over two more hurdles satisfactorily. Jolly Beggar (Beale) negotiated four hurdles. Ho was inclined to bo slovenly, owing to not having much pace on, and should do better with a mate. Beale has decided to settle at Riccarton for the winter and is promised a busy period. Ho will go to the North Island with D. O'Connor's team and will ride Rasouli in his steeplechase engagements, while O'Connor will pilot Royal Limond. Horses for Ellerslie It is intended to race Rasouli and Royal Limond at the Egmont meeting on May 7 and 9 and at the Waipa meeting on May. 16 before going to Ellerslie. Beale has also been engaged to ride Jolly Beggar at "Waipa and Ellerslie. This gelding is likely to be accompanied north by Glenavon, whose form at the Easter meeting at Ricoarton suggested that he is on the way to a return of the good form he displayed in the early part of the season. Owlsnest, a two-year-old filly by Polazel from Owlscombe, has been sold to Mr. A. G. Macdonald, Geraldine. Four yearling fillies were this week sent down from Stonyhurst, comprising Mob Rule, by Winning Hit from Babel; Counterblast, by Jericho from Counterscarp; Card Player, by Paper Money from Shufflo; and Great Bramble, by Magnus from Brambletye. Fracas ran her last race when she won the concluding event at Riccarton on Easter Tuesday. She walked in very lame, and, as her trouble was in a suspensory ligament, it was decided to retire her to the stud. Fracas proved herself a most useful stake-earner for Sir Charles Clifford, and, although hampered at times by soreness, she was a consistent and game performer. Condition of Pahu Pahu looks none the worse for his trip to Riverton and it is intended to race him at Waipa and Ellerslie. Dollar Bill, in the samo ownership, will accompany him. Punchestown has rejoined T. H. Gillett's team. He is carrying solid condition and looks as if.he has had plenty of work before being sent down from Longbcach station. Gillett will have a strong jumping quartette in Hounslow, Punchestown, Streamline and Wexford Bridge for the winter months. Friday Night is once more a regular worker at Riccarton. The foot trouble from which .he previously suffered has been overcome and at present he is considered quite sound. Chief Ranger was left here after racing at Easter and is at present enjoying a respite, at M. B. Edwards' trotting establishment. He will be kept in light work on Edwards' private track, but it is not intended to race him again until early next spring. Custos suffered no ill-effects from his racing at Eas;ter, and, following a light blister, he is boing given an easy time*. It is intended to keep him in light exercise during the winter, and. should a trip to Sydney be decided upon,, it is likely ho will be taken over a month or so before the spring racing begins. His stable-mate, the two-year-old Coxscomb, by Philamor from Egotism, has been gelded and put aside for the winter. OPOTIKI JOCKEY CLUB KING'S BIRTHDAY PROGRAMME [by telegraph—own coiuiespondf.nt] OPOTIKI, Thursday Members of the executive of the Opotiki Jockey Club visited Tauranga yesterday to make arrangements for the holding of the Opotiki races at I auranga on Juno 23, the King's Birthday. The programme, which has to be approved by tho Auckland District Committee, will offer prize money totalling £9OO, and there will be a hurdle race and a steeplechase included. PROMISING GALLOPER PALMYRA'S FIRST VICTORY In the opinion of an experienced South Island observer, one of the best novices seen there for many years won her first race at the second Greymouth meeting. This was the four-year-old Palmyra, by Paladin from Sweet Beauty, by Greyspear, son of Spearmint, from Sweet Smile, by San Francisco, son of St. Simon, from Winning Way, own sister to Winning Hit. Sweet Beauty is a half-sister to Giggleswick and Polydora, and is the dam of Cottingham and Rebel Star. Palmyra, who had a couplo of placed performances before winning over six and a-half furlongs, is described as a grand mover, who looks like a cup winner in the making. YEARLINGS AT HAWERA PREPARATION FOR RACING Among the yearlings now being propared for racing at Hawera are a few who will early attract notice, both by reason of their well-grown appearance and their relationship to good performers. 0. Cox has two colts who are well accredited in both respects. One is by Larfdiam from Kilting, who will race as Lickem, and who is expected to reveal his ability earlv. The other is by Chief Ruler from Phrosa by Limond from Cowl, and so of the same clan as Veilmond, Rational, The Masquerader, Pelmet and others. F. Erhorn has a filly by Acre from the dam of Gay Chief and Gay Circle and W. Grindlay has a brother to Blixten. Two of the progeny of Resinous, by Limond, are under the chargo of R. Brough. They are a filly and a gelding and are from Fairy Girl and Little Thrush respectively. A colt by Musketoon from Panette and a filly by Chief Ruler from Sweet Friar are in J. Fryer's stable, the filly boing held on lease by that trainer.
