AUCKLAND ASSOCIATION SIX TOURNAMENTS STAGED HIGH STANDARD MAINTAINED A loss on the season's operations is disclosed in the report of the Auckland Boxing Association, to be presented at the annual meeting next Wednesday, but the deficit is the lowest for some years and indicates that boxing is mow receiving better support. During the season six carnivals were staged, including the Auckland championship tournament, and throughout the eight nights' boxing the high amateur standard was well maintained. The report state* thnt large entries were received for the championship tournament. The winners were:—Heavyweight, I). Lindesay; Unlit-heavyweight, H. E. Neale: middle-weight, C. Farmer; welter-weight, W. Purdie; light-weight. R. McLachlnn; feather-weight, Percy Kelly; bantam-weight, K. Moran; flyweight, H. Allott.

Trophies won during the carnival were awarded as followsCraig Cup: Presented by Mr. E. A. Craig, for the most scientific boxer, W. Purdie; Johns' Memorial Belt, presented by the friends of the late Mr. Harry Johns, to the champion of the lightweight class. R. McLaclilan; Rainger Memorial Cup, presented by members of the family of the late W. J. Rainger to the champion of the welter-weight clbsb, W. Purdie; Duff Cup presented by Messrß. C. H. Drysdale and Company to the champion of the feather-weight class. P. Kelly; Hydra Cup. presented by Mr. F. Harrison to the champion ol the bantam-weight class, lv. Moran; Yugoslav Cup. presented by the Yugoslav community of Auckland fo the champion o, the heavyweight class, D. Lindesay. Kohn Shield, presented by Messrs. A. Kohn, Limited, to the trainer with the largest number of title-winners at the championship tournament, Mr. E. Donovan, foi: the eighth year in succession. The New Zealand championships were decided at Dunediu and the association wa» represented by the following:—H. Allott, flyweight champion; P. Kelly, featherweight champion: W. Purdie, welter-weight champion; and D. Lindesay. heavyweight champion, 'jwo other Auckland champions competed, K. Moran. bantanvweight. representing the Dargaville Association, and <-■. Farmer, middle-weight champion, representing the Te Aroha Association. D. Lindesay was successful in gaining th» heavyweight title, W. Purdie and h.. Moran were rumieru-up in their respective classes, and two others were defeated by the ultimate champions. Special mention was due to Mr. Rugo for the able manner in which he managed the team, and to Mr. W. Williams for his untiring efforts as trainer. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Dozing Association was held at Dunedin, Mr. W. Ru.jg. president, representing the Auckland Ansociation. He pointed out that the centenary celebrations were being held in Auckland in 1910 and made a claim to hold the New Zealand amateur boxing championships ir. Auckland during that year. The following six professional bouts were staged durin.r the year, the firstnnmed in each case bising the winners:—Bunny Martin v. Marine Ryan: Johnny McKay v. Jack Jarvis: Billy Aitken v. Billy McKay; Billy Aitken v. Frank Taylor: Watty Robertson v. Mark Candy; and Seville Mudgway v. Jack McMahon. The preliminaries to these bouts were always of a high standard and were thoroughly enjoyed. An innovation at the first carnival was a teams' match._ ten men aside, ten one-minute rounds, with one point allotted the winner of each round. H.M.S. Diomede beat H.M.S. Dunedin by 5t points to points. Thin contest proved most successful. Another teams' match was staged at a later carnival between the Northern _ Boxing Club and an Auckland team. Auckland Grammar School, Technical College. King's College. Middlemore, and King's School. Remuera. Special thanks were tendered to the masters, who donated so much of thei T time to advance boxing. Mr W. J. Harper, the association s custodian. attended to the matter of .erecting and dismantling the ring, and seeing that it and the other, gear was returned in good order and condition after being used by the colleges. The association a thanks were due to Mr. Harper for his untiring efforts. PLUTO TO OPPOSE JACOBS The large attendance at the Town Hall on Monday evening proved conclusively that boxing has not lost its hold on the public, which wae extremely well satisfied by the fine fighting in the amateur and professional bouts. Patrons will be pleased to learn that the Auckland Boxing Association has arranged a ißimilarly attractive programme for next Tuesday evening. The principal contest on Text Tuesday's programme will be a .professional one between Cyril Pluto, who less than a week ago proved himselt the most accomplished• boxer to visit .New Zealand for some years, , and Era Jacobs, the Wellington middle-weight. In experience Pluto will have the advantage, bnt Jacobs ie a good fighter and hard puncher, and quite capable, of upsetting any calculation that the visitor will have everything his own way. The pair should bo extremely well matched, and Auckland supporters can congratulate themselves on the fact that the association has secured Pluto for another contest, and that it has also obtained the services of such a good performer as Jacobs. On the amateur aide of the Jjrogramme some fine entertainment has been arranged. Special bouts have been selected, and the series should produce great fighting. Another popular iteiin will be the return contests between the Orakei Maori team and the Auckland team, which provided wonderful entertainment on last Monday« programme. In every way the programme is outstanding and it is expected that an even greater crowd than last Monday will be present next Tuesday evening. AITKEN DEFEATS JARVIS [BY telegraph—press association] NEW PLYMOUTH. Thursday In a 15-rounds boxing contest at Hawera last night Bill* Aitken 'Wei hnglon). 9.2. defeated Jack Jarvis (Eltham), 9.6. The bout lacked incident, Aitken taking the fight to his opponent and winning every round. Aitken was cautioned for alleged low hitting in the Erst round.
