THE HARBOUR BRIDGE
Sir,—The latest decision of the Auckland City Council on the harbour bridge project is very disappointing. The council says that with a harbour bridge there would be a general exodus of city ratepayers to the North Shore. We North Shore people are pretty optimistic, but we never went so far as that. The City Council also says that North Shore development should lie retarded until Auckland City has another <M,OOO houses. This glso applies to the Far North. Supposing .'U,OOO houses were erected next week, the city would immediately extend its boundaries, but still on the south side of the Waitemata. The fact is that the city councillors require a mental tonic. The Government has issued a general order to the people of New Zealand. That order is "advance." Tho City Council, instead of getting into step, has adopted the tactics and policy of Lots wife. As the North Shore Local Bodies' Bridge Committee has apparently develo|>ed that tired feeling it appears to me that the old Harbour Bridge Association should be resurrected and confer with the Automobile Association.
