THE PLIGHT OF ETHIOPIA
Sir,- —Your correspondent "Leonardo da Vinci" states: "Italy produced in two generations more men of culture and genius than Britain evolved in a thousand years," implying that such people are incapable of the atrocities attributed to them in Abyssinia. He failed to mention that one can see in the streets of an Italian town or village more cruelty to animals than could be witnessed in a thousand English cities. Ihe depth of men's culture cannot be estimated by their appreciation of the arts, but by their attitude to defenceless creatures, whether animal or human. E.C.
