DEMAND FOR DAIRY COWS
PRICES AT WESTFI ELD HIGHEST LEVEL FOR YEARS Tlie highest love! in values for dairy cattle in recent years was reached at the Westfield weekly stock sale yesterday, when £l3 10s was paid for a Jersey cow. According to statements by auctioneers and dealers this figure has not been paid for dairy cattle at Westfield for several years. The general level of values appreciated to a marked extent and a considerable number of cows and heifers changed hands at prices ranging between £7 and £9, The demand has been improving over recent months and the top values have steadily appreciated from in the vicinity of £7 to the present level. The bidding also reflected the keenness of the demand for quality stock. In recent years, when values were low, auctioneers were mostly content with modest bids of ha!f-a-crown. Yesterday, opening bids were frequently of 10s, and while they tapered off somewhat, there was comparatively little need for auctioneers to expound the merits of the cattle under the hammer.
