DAIRY FACTORY HOURS
EFFECT OF NEW PROPOSAL GREATLY INCREASED COSTS [by telegraph OWN correspondent] HAMILTON. Thursday Dairy factory directors, interviewed with regard to the Government's legislation covering hours of work and rates of pay in dairy factories, were reluctant to express their opinion on the subject, although they showed deep concern regarding the future of the industry. Several directors declined to make any comment, but Mr. S. A. Ferguson, chairman ot directors of the Norfolk Co-operative Dairy Company, Limited, and president of the South Auckland Dairy Association, said there was no doubt the new conditions would result, in increased costs in the manufacture of dairy produce. It was necessary, he said, to work seven days a week in cheese factories, and the Government legislation would mean the employment of more men, thus, greatlv increasing costs
The only solution lay in closing the cap between prices realised for New Zealand prodi'?« on the world market and tho cost of manufactured goods in a highly-protected market. Tho payment of a compensatory price for produce which would cover all manufacturing and marketing costs would help the situation.
