SYNTHETIC WOOL

OPPOSITION IN SOUTH AFRICA LEVY TO FINANCE CAMPAIGN CAPETOWN. April 02 Woolgrowers in the Cape Province are anxious to assist Australia and New Zealand in their campaign against synthetic fibres. The congress of the Cape Province branch of National Woolgrowers at Port Elizabeth decided to recommend the imposition of a levy of one shilling a bale to create a fund for the campaign. The fact that a Wool Industry Protection and Research Bill wiiuld be among the legislation to be introduced in New Zealand by the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. W. Le® Martin, was announced in March. It was stated that provision would be made in the bill for a small levy on all wool sold in, or exported from, New Zealand. With the fund thus created steps would be taken to combat propaganda against the use of wool. Wool research in New Zealand would a'so be prosecuted with the fund. Mr. Lee Martin said the introduction of the bill had been made at the request of sheep farmers, who had submitted their proposals. Some time ago a wool levy bill had tnet with opposition, but the present proposals were approved by those in the industry. Support for the proposed compulsory wool levy was expressed by woolgrowers at a meeting of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Associution on April 8-. Members mentioned that previous, opposition was based on ix>o large a proportion of the funds raised being intended for research. Now that about/ threequarters of the money was intended for propaganda, the sheep farmers were more inclined to support the proposal.
