HOCKEY SEASON

LADIES' ASSOCIATION REVIEW OF PAST SEASON SUCCESSFUL TOURNEYS HELD A satisfactory season's activities arc reviewed in the thirty-second report of the Auckland Ladies' Hockey Association, to be presented at tho annual meeting this evening. In all, 28 teamsp 13 collegiate and 15 business girls' teams, took part in the local competitions, this number being three more in all than for the previous season. The increase was due to the re-entry of Training College teams, owing to the reopening of tho college, and the entry of one additional team from each of the St. David's and Kiwi Clubs. The report draws attention to the standard and style of play displayed among the city teams, stating that these are not what they were somo years back. Inability to secure combined team practices, other than when playing in actual championship games, has a lot to do with the state, but probably failure to employ a more uniform interpretation by the umpires of the rules of tho game, and tho more strict enforcement of penalties for all breaches, has some bearing on the matter. The championship points gained by the individual teams in each division wero es follows: Business Girls' Section.—Senior grade: Kiwi A, 24; Wesley, 1G; Mount Eden, 14; C'levcdon, 10; Technical Past Students, 9; Ngaro, 8; Kiwi B, 3. Intermediate grade: St. David's. Bible Class, 30; Papakura, 16; Mount Eder., 14; Wesley, 0. Junior grade: Technical Past Students, ,30; Kiwi, 1G; Ngaro, 14; St. David's Bible Class, 0. Collegiate Section.—Senior grade: Training College, 13; Epscm Grammar Present, 12; University A. 11; Epsom Grammar.Old Girls, 8; Diocesan Old Girls. 4; Diocesan College Present Girls, 4; St. Cuthbert'g Ciilege, 2; University B, 2. Junior grade: Training College, 8; Epsom Grammar Present A, G; Diocesan High School. 4; Epsom Grammar Present B. 4; St. Cuthbert'a College, 0. Levy on Players The levy of threepence a player was still made by the New Zealand Women's Hockey Association on all registered playerr throughout the Dominion, and for the 1935 season the association reports a £l2 16s contribution toward the fund, a slightly smaller amount than for the previous season. Tbe 1 money collected annually in this connection is divided proportionately between the overseas team touring fund and the general working account of the New Zealand Association. The King's Birthday tournament was held on June 3 and was again very successful, the association working in conjunction with the Auckland Hockey Association along similar lines as for the previous season. Great keenness was displayed throughout all matches during the annual Country Week tourney, which was held from June 24 to 20. but it is reported that this- keenness could have been more pronounced "in some of the ordinary club games. Three Avtcklarfd teams and 10 teams belonging to the sub-associations participated and the standard of play was slightly better than that witnessed at the previous tourney, although the conditions of the playing fields did not promote good hockey. Many relied on individual efforts, and this, combined with the holding of the tourney so early in the season, when most teams had been operating for only a few weeks, did not tend to produce the combination so-necessary in good hockey. • The association wan represented by one team at the New Zealaßd tournament, which was allocated to the Poverty Bay Association and played in fiisborne from August 30 to September 7. The association also entered two teams in the competitions of the Auckland Women's Cricket Association and won the championship in each grade. A New Zealand ladies' team visited Australia last season and had ft very successful tour. Although no financial statement hae been furnished, it is understood that expenses were overcome bj means of the one shilling contributions wmcli most players in the Dominion donated, the amount furnished by the players themselves, land an amount from the touring levy fund. The association was fortunate enough to have one member in the team, Miss Mary Cotter, of Whangarei. Umpires' Association A feature of the association's activities during the year was the decision of the executive to foster the aims of the New Zealand Women's Hockey Umpires' Association. In this connection. 11 members, including five members of the executive and the treasurer and secretary, took the theoretical test. All passed the test set with varying degrees of percentage, ranging from 95 per cent to G4 per cent, a very satisfactory result. The report mentions the loss sustained during the season by Miss M. Graham, an executive member, in the death of her father; by Mrs. Grant Cowen, a life-member of the association, in the death of . her mother, and bv Miss G. Lowe, who lost her father. The deaths of Miss Jean Armour, of the Technical Past Students' Club, and of Miss Francis Berrich, of the "Whangarei Association, are also mentioned with regTet. The balance-sheet, with its debit of fl lis 7d, does not show as healthy a balance as could be wished, but the money has gone to ensure that the recognised home of hockey in Auckland, the Remuera hockey grounds, is retained for that purpose. NIGHT PRACTICE AT PAPATQETOE Ideal conditions for night practice of hockey in the Papatoetoe district have been arranged as the result of a conference hetween the local club and the Papatoetoe Town Board. Suggestions that the turf oval at the Papatoetoe Stadium be mßde available were put before the Town iioard. It was pointed out that the excellent floodlighting system would enable the practices to be carried out under unusually good conditions. An agreement has been reached under which the 4Q-odd players are to hold practice movements on two nights weekly durinff the season. The Hockey Club has agreed to deposit £5 with the board as a guarantee against damage to the cycle track and general amenities, and to pay a rental of £4 to cover the cost of lighting and use of the ground. Practices were commenced last night, when the players expressed satisfaction with the fine facilities.
