GRANT REFUSED

RATE RELIEF FUND POSITION AT PAPATOETOE The application of the Papatoetoe fTown Board for a share of the Government's special fund for the relief of hardship caused by non-parent of rates on State-owned properties was refused by the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, in a letter to the board. The letter stated that according to the board's statement the loss to the district amounted to £B2 lis lid over a period' of five years in respect of properties administered by the Crown bs mortgagee in possession. As such amount constituted a very small proportion of the total rates struck it could not be claimed that extreme hardship 7 had been caused. The clerk, Mr. W. Young, said there jwas also the loss of £2567 on properties which had reverted to the Crown through the State Advances Department. He said he had pointed out to the Minister that an adjoining local body, Otahuhn, had been granted £145 on an estimated loss of £3561. As that district had a population of about 6000 and Papatoetoe about 2300, there appeared to be good grounds for Papatoetoe's fclaim. The board decided to request the Minister to reconsider the case in the Jight of the clerk's report.
