HAMILTON AFFAIRS

(PARKING OPPOSED DISCUSSION BY RATEPAYERS [from our own* correspondent] ' HAMILTON. "Wednesday The recent decision of the Hamilton Borough Council to revert to tho system of parallel parking of motor-cars in Victoria Street was criticised at a meeting last evening of the Hamilton East .Ratepayers Association. Mr. W. C. Dixon said he had been amazed at the council s decision, and he maintained that the system of angle parking had never been correctly applied, if the regulations had been enforced properly the area of parking 6pace would have been increased by 25 per cent. Mr W. A. Curteis, a member of the Borough Council, said he favoured the 30-degree angle parking when it was introduced, and had also advocated the painting of parking lines in Victoria Street. The inspectors had given 18fi warnings to motorists for incorrect parking, but the public would not stop the cars at the correct angle. Erom his point of view the reversion to parallel parking was a retrograde step and he would favour any more satisfactory alternative. It was decided to request the Borough Council to reconsider its decision. Members also discussed at considerable Ifength the proposal to remove the Garden Place Hill. Mr. T. Parker, a candidate for the Mayoralty at tho last municipal elections, said that when the Borough Council's proposals were itiade known he intended to take the platform and fight the scheme. After a number of members had expressed their views it was decided to postpone the discussion until definite proposals in connection with the scheme were made known.
