DARING THIEVES
RAID ON JEWELLER'S SHOP INTERRUPTED AT WORK [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday A daring attempt to smash the window of a jeweller's shop in Cashel Street at 8 o'clock this evening was abandoned when the thieves were surprised by a motor-car stopping near the shop. The men, who were not seen, escaped. The owner of the shop, Mr. Francis Curtis, who arrived soon after 8 o'clock, found that a big iron grille covering part of the shop front had been torn off, the lock being broken, and part of the window had been covered with treacle so that it would break without noise. The shop was raided successfully in September last, when thieves escaped with £ISOO worth of goods. The attempt made to-night was very daring, as the shop was well lighted and every action of the thieves could have been seen by passers by. Cashel Street at this point is by no means deserted at 8 o'clock. There were many valuable diamonds in the window, and Mr. Curtis estimated that in diamonds alone the window could have yielded £250 for the thieves.
