SWIMMING

NORTH SHORE CARNIVAL LOWE MEMORIAL SHIELD MOUNT EDEN TEAM WINS Mastering the North Shore team by a very slender margin in the G66 2-3 yds inter-club relay championship at the North Shore Amateur Swimming and Life-saving Club's carnival in the Tepid Baths last night, the Mount Eden team of 20 men sealed victory for the Tommy Lowe. Memorial Shield, their club having scored the most points in the two races already decided this season. North Shore was the holder of the shield, for which points were gained as follows: — Mount Eden, 13; North Shore, 7; Waitemata, 6. For the first few laps' Mount Eden and North Shore were on almost even terms and then the latter lost its lead, dropping several ynrds behind. A gradual gain enabled it to overtake Mount Eden at the ninth man. The two teams swam level for another 50 yards, and then North Shore worked up a, substantial advantage. All appeared hopeless for Mount Eden, but it had the faster swimmers remaining, and over the last four laps North Shore's lead was steadily reduced. Mount Eden's penultimate representative, P. Hanan, caught his opponent, E. Stevens, so that R. B. Frankham and N. Crump plunged for the final lap simultaneously. Amid intense excitement they sped down the bath, swimming Btroke for stroke, and Frankham gave his side victory by the barest possible margin. The time was 5m 55 2-ss.

The fast time of 55 3-5s was registered by N. Crump in winning the 100 yds championship of the North Shore Club. A win for North Shore resulted in the 200 yds ladies' inter-club relay championship, the Tommy Lowe Junior Memorial Shield, for competition among the primary schools of the North Shore, was won by Northcote School, which was successful in two relay contests.
