IMPROVED FINANCES GOOD RATE COLLECTION A continued improvement in the finances of the Manukau County Council was shown in tho annual report and balance-sheet presented by tho county clerk and treasurer, Mr. E. Ashcroft, at a meeting of the council yesterday, increases in revenue were revealed in several items and, in spite of a reduction of over £28,000 made in the rating charges over & period of five years, the financial position of the county has been consolidated and placed on a sound basis. Collection of the current rates had shown the best result for several years. Rates amounting to £31,386 had been levied and collections totalled £28,213, or 90 per cent, compared with 88 per cent collected last year. Arrears amounting to 36 per cent also had been collected. .Regarding arrears outstanding, the treasurer stated that the position concerning rates on Crown properties was still most unsatisfactory, it was the principal obstacle' in dealing with arrears. Total receipts amounted to £97,436 and payments to £101,298. At the end of the year tho county fund showed a credit of £6327 and the loan accounts, £1770. In tho general account the amount provided in the estimates and temporarily charged to the ridings was £5200. Owing to increases in items of revenue the sum had been reduced to £2862, leaving a credit of £2338 for division among the ridings. A total of £6796 had been received from the Main Highways Board and £1478 from the Public Works Department by way of grants. Out of £2502 received from the distributing authority of the No. 1A heavy traffic district in licence fees it was shown that £1584 had been collected in the county itself. The position was most satisfactory, said the chairman, Mr. F.iM. Waters. The result had been achieved solely by a careful administrative policy and efficient _ engineering supervision. The council intended to proceed with its programme of laying dustlesg surfaced roads where it was considered essential.
