LEARNING TO FLY

SECOND HERALD TEST EXAMINATION OF ENTRANTS FINALISTS TO BE ANNOUNCED Six finalists for the second aviation scholarship offered by the proprietors of the New Zealand Herald will be announced in the Herald next Monday, following the testing of the last candidates by Flight-Lieutenant D. M. Allan, chief instructor to the Auckland Aero Club, at Mangero aerodrome on Sunday. It was hoped to hare the testing of all candidates completed before last week-end, but tho fact that some are residents of country districts, coupled with unfavourable weather, made this impossible. The finalists will later undergo further tests with Mr. Allan, and the winner will then be chosen. He or she will receive free tuition until the examination for an A licence lias been passed, and will also become a pilot member of the club for a year. The remaining five finalists will become associate members for the same period, until April 30, 1937. The aero club also offers to train the unsuccessful finalists and certain other selected entrants whoso ability was noted by Mr. Allan during the tests, for an inclusive fee of £35 each. Owing to the fact that pupils vary considerably in the amount of dual instruction they require before being allowed to. fly solo, it is not the practice of aero clubs to fix an inclusive amount for a course of lessons, but the concession is being made to give an opportunity to likely pupils to learn to fly.
