RETURN FOR MARCH HIGHER EXPORT VALUES RESULTS FOR 12 MONTHS £12,237,000 COMMODITY EXCESS The overseas trade of New Zealand for the 12 months ended March 31, 1936, resulted in an excess of exports over imports valued at £12,237,000 in New Zealand currency. This is the visible commodity balance, the value of specie being left out of account in arriving at the total. For the month of March, concerning which preliminary figures were issued by the Customs Department in Wellington yesterday, the valuation of exports was £4,411,000 greater than that for imports, compared with £3,285,000 in the corresponding month last year, and £4,289,000 in 193,1. An increase of over in export values has been a little exceeded by a rise in imports during the same period. For the year 1933-34, with exports valued £46,043,000 or £3,633,000 less than in the year just closed, the excess over imports was £19,907,000, or £7,670,000 greater than in 1935-36. Imports had then recovered very little from the low point reached in 1931-32. The table which follows gives the figures for the 12 months ended March 31 in each year shown:—

Returns for the first nine months of thfe production year, which extends from July to June, show an. increase of £6,742.000 in expbrt values, compared with .the corresponding nine months of 1934-35. |Jn consequence, though the impor: total has also risen Substantially,.the excess of exports for the period is more than £3,500,000 greater than last year. There was no export of specie during March, the value of «that imported being £4154. For the three months ended March 31 the exports were valued at £37,200 and the imports at J27312.
