AVIATION TESTS
HERALD SCHOLAKSHIP FAIR ENTRANTS' SUCCESS SCHOOLGIRL THE WINNER [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Monday Flying conditions were sufficiently improved at the Rukuhia airport to-day to permit the holding of the final tests for the Herald aviation scholarship by the Waikato branch of the Auckland Aero Club. It was originally intended to hold the tests yesterday, but owing to the unfavourable weather a postponement was necessary. The seven candidates chosen to compete in the final tests were given a further 30 minutes in the air, during which straight flying and right and left-hand turns were carried out, marks being allocated for the manner in which the manoeuvres were executed. In announcing the results, the examiner, Flight-Lieutenant W. H. Lett, said it had been extremely difficult to differentiate between the finalists, all of whom had done exceedingly well. The results were as follows: Miss J. Howden (Waiuku), 123 points 1 Miss B. Turner (Tauranga), 120 . . 2 Mr W. H. Brown (Hamilton), 115 . . 3 Mr. F. J. Steele (Rukuhia), 113 . . 4 Mr. J. Rowlands (Tauranga), 108 . . 5 Mr. D. Carlson (Okoroire), 104 . . g Mr. A. Yeoman (Taneatua), 98 . . 7 Miss Howden is a daughter of Dr. C. E. Howden, of Waiuku. She is a pupil at the Waikato Diocesan Girls' School, Hamilton, and is in her .fifth year at the school. She is 17 years of age, and is head prefect and the school games captain. Miss B. Turner, of Tauranga, who gained second place, was also runner-up in the previous scholarship contests. A photograph of the winner and runner-up appears on page 11.
